Believe it or not, but here in Ontario, an animal rights activists argued in court that "...animals should be persons under law..." While I'm sure most farmers would find this ludicrous, take a minute and think about one writer 's response to the newspaper article.The letter goes on to say, in part, that since animals would no longer be sold as meat for consumption if the law was so changed, farmers would still be responsible for their care. These sows and piglets now equal to people, would be considered low income families since they have no jobs, and would be eligible for government assistance programs. At today's support levels, a sow with eight piglets would qualify for about $3200 per month for housing and food. Here, as well, health care and drugs would be provided free of care.A 'school bus' would pick the small ones up and take them away for part of the day. As they aged, they would also receive an old age security pension. Since the farmer is caring for them ,he would receive these benefits on behalf of the pigs and see to their care.So, a barn full of pigs...and of course all other animals under a farmer's care....would amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars payable to the guardians of these animals per year, paid out of government collected tax revenue.
