Hi Barnyard Yes the tractor does have a frame as you say, But it is not strong enough for what Deere tried to do with it. Many of those earlier model 4wd's like these have messed the blocks up due to frame /torque twist. They really don't like having the hp cranked to pull bigger equipment and huge blades on them being used like a Cat D9.
I had one here 2 years ago for a customer, It kept blowing head gaskets(head was rebuilt and good) he changed 2 and Deere did one . When it came here I found the guys had missed that the block was split between all the sleeves if you looked real close. The cause extra hp, having a blade on and pulling a big seeder/cultivator for 7500 hours.
I read they did it on here and google searched as well, yes it came up more than once there to. The rest of the one I had here was worn out beyond repair. It was put back together to get it out of the shop and the guy was told dump it while it runs. He took it home went back to work pushing brush, it went bang 2 hours later. When he called after, he said "maybe I should of listened a bit harder" L.O.L.
The front ends are designed different on the newer 9000 series 4wd's so the motor isn't a stressed part of the chassis/transmission like these older 8000 series so they don't do it. There are probably quite a few 8000 series that will never do it, if they haven't been worked hard and had the pumps opened up. I was warned it can be an unknown risk buying a used motor for them without a known history, because you never know whats going on with the block until it goes south one day.

In the exhaust you can hear an occasion 'poofing' sound like somethings not firing on all cylinders. Under loaded conditions the tractor seems to lack power and it belches black smoke out of the exhaust. For some reason it just doesn't want to start up without cranking and cranking the starter.
