You mostly see them on the swing cylinders of a rubber tire backhoe because of the chance of then being down in the dirt and rock. They make rubber ones that are water tight for those that do a lot of work in water such as cleaning out a pond. We use to load sand along the Mississippi at a company that used them on all cylinders. The sand blows in the wind and sticks to the cylinders and is like sand paper on the seals.
