If it is popping back when trying to start, it could be the ignition timing is wrong (180* out), wired wrong in the distributor cap, carbon tracked cap, or moisture in the cap. Try pulling the coil wire, give it a crank. If the popping stops, there is likely an ignition problem.

Another problem that can cause blowing back is an exhaust valve not opening, as in a bent pushrod or flat cam, or an intake stuck open or not sealing.
One more cause, not real common, but a restricted exhaust will cause blow back.
