If I remember right you said your current place is being taken over by a university. I am assuming they are not going to be in the house rental business. Take what you want/need don't worry about the rest.
I moved 8 years ago 1800 mi one way. 3 loads with the pickup/gooseneck, and 2 semi loads so far. I still have 1 semi load at Mom's and a couple things there to sell yet. All the stuff that I didn't want, and had no significant collector value, I gave my BIL scrap rights. Whatever he sold or hauled was his to keep - I just didn't want to deal with it. No point hauling things you don't need.
The previous owner of the new place also left me a couple $1000 in scrap iron, and a whole bunch of other junk. But I don't think a lady in the nursing home was going to do much about it.
