I've camped most of my life. From tents, then on to a few pop-ups, now a hard body with just my wife and I. We're both still working, so it's mostly weekend trips.
Just to go sit in a campground gets old. Look into an area for a festival, tractor show, car show, tourist event, etc, then go there for the weekend. Your camper kinda becomes a mobile home for those events. Has worked well for us over the years. Wife is content sitting in/at the camper reading/knitting. Me, I like to get out. Thus, this arrangement works well for tractor shows & such.
Couple things I've learned over the years:
1) Stock the camper with its own dishes & cooking appliances. 2) Stock the fridge with general food items and keep it plugged in thru the summer. Load with fresh food just before you leave. 3) Stock the camper with camping clothes. 4) Stock the camper with folding chairs, outside appliances, tools.
When we decide to go some place, a quick trip to the grocery store, verify adequate clothes, and off we go. I know of people who still unpack the whole unit, making a lot of un-necessary work before and after a weekend trip. We get home, park it, plug it in, empty the laundry hamper, and we're done till next time.
Yup, pulling a camper costs more than a car. I have developed a calculator that allows me to figure out if going away for a weekend (like a wedding) is cheaper to camp, or go to a hotel. Interesting to play with. The farther you travel with your camper, the longer you have to stay to offset the travel cost.
