Been using radiant (infrared? not sure if that technology) them for 30+ years and will be with nothing else. In comparison to a Dearborn (Brand, once popular down here) space heater (where you see the raw blue flame illuminating grates behind it for radiation) of 30k BTU, I use a 15k BTU radiant and it will run you out of the area whereby the Dearborn wouldn't. The radiant heats things, not air per se, and heats things across the room which the Dearborn didn't. Then you had to vent the Dearborn . The radiant is said to be 95+ percent efficient (and I believe it) and requires no venting assuming your house has some fresh air at least periodically, like opening and closing outside access doors.
I mainly use an "Earth" brand wood stove to heat the majority of the living area, but on days when I haven't fired that up, or just not that cold, I use radiant heat there and in remote, non-bedrooms when in use. For bedrooms I use electric oil radiators which are safe.
I deliberately built my house with zone climates in mind so that when I am not using a room, I don't have to spend fuel money conditioning the air like I did in town with central air and heat and other problems associated with central distribution that I experienced.....yes I know you can close off the vent but there is more to it than that.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
