My attached garage is 24x24 extremely well insulated and a 1500 w electric baseboard takes care it very easily. I had to do a brake job yesterday and moved tools to that garage to do the job.
I have a 24x24 detached brick garage, workshop, not so well insulated. I use three overhead 1500 W electric IR heaters that I can focus on myself when working on something in middle of garage. I can stay warm, but the rest of the garage is cold.
I have two 18000 Btu portable IR LP heaters, Mr Heater brand, for back up heat incase I lose electricity. All my places are total electric. I was making sure the LP heaters were working properly. While drilling some holes in pole barn, I turned them on, pointed them towards me and it didn't take long before my legs were getting very warm. Both heaters were on the floor. If I had to use them all the time, I would make something to put one heater up higher to warm the rest of my body.
I know a man who has a house with a vented LP IR heater. It requires no electricity. He uses it for back up heat.
Before buying Mr IR heaters, I tried using the LP heaters that are round and attach above LP tank. Within 10 minutes I couldn't breath and had a tremendous headache. Mr. Heaters are extremely clean burning, no smell, no headaches. They even come with an O2 sensor.
I have a digital CO meter in the event I had to use my IR heaters indoors, which to date, I haven't. My heaters are backup only to prevent pipes from freezing. If you were going to use one in a house or a garage full time, I definitely would recommend getting a vented mode.
IR heaters, for the most part warm what it strikes and not the air so much. Like the sun, IR heat can travel through the extreme cold and vacuum of outer space and only warms the earth.

Today's Featured Article - Upgrading an Oliver Super 55 Electrical System - by Dennis Hawkins. My old Oliver Super 55 has been just sitting and rusting for several years now. I really hate to see a good tractor being treated that way, but not being able to start it without a 30 minute point filing ritual every time contributed to its demise. If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
