I plant Crimson Clover so it over Winters and will produce a heavy crop of forage and pretty red flowers around the middle of June,after it starts to die I disk it all and continue to disk until I plant the first plots around the first of August,2nd group of plots go in around the 1st of Sept.Have almost no weeds with a mix of Crimson Clover,Spring Oats,Hairy Vetch and Turnips,plus any weeds that start will get killed by the first frost.For me it doesn't pay to plant early as the deer like the tender stuff.For this coming year if I were you I'd plant buckwheat on every plot as it'll smother weeds and its a good Summer plot mix to start the deer coming in.In one of my plots I was hunting yesterday saw 11 deer in all and the plot still looks fairly good although its been heavily grazed by the deer this Fall.Nothing I wanted to shoot though yesterday.Also have found the expensive/fancy stuff from some of these deer plot mixture folks to be not very good.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
