Grey Fergys

Can anyone help me with info on Grey 4 cylinder deisel fergys
I have been told there are at least 2 different 4 cyl deisels in
the greys and one is a good reliable motor and one is a failure, There
is a grey fergy going very cheap which has a broken back axle and I
fear that it is one with the dud motor.
Is there serial nos or any other way to tell which fergy it is?
