I have a similar story, in a way. My dad died in 1998 after a year long fight against emphysema. His last few weeks were in and out. Most of the time he was aware of people around him but not necessarily who they were. He wouldn't eat anything to speak of, but I found that he would eat chocolate ice cream if coaxed just a bit. We were simply trying to get something down if you know what I mean.
One of those times, a couple of days before he passed, I was being a bit pushy trying to get him to eat a bit. He was getting aggravated and it showed. We had always picked at one another as long as I could remember, and I was working at that angle. I asked him if he knew who I was. His answer: "You're a horses a**, that's who your are!" He had a bit of an evil grin on his face as he said it. Right after that he drifted back into his not knowing anyone. It was the last time I think he knew me. Being told what I was was one of the best things I could have heard from my dad.
