: My J.D. 4000 is a little hard starting when temp. drops down .I currently have it set up with two 6 volts in series to make 12 volts, would two 12 volt batteries hooked in parellel start this tractor better. thanks gr. : "That A Boy Gearld" Follow his advice to the letter and this will fix most starting complaints! The only thing that I would like to add is that, on the late model 4020 and 4000 tractors did shared a common failure wich would cause this symptom and damage your starter. Check your ground cable connection where it bolts to (or grounds) to the top of the transmission cover. This is the negitive cable on the left hand battery (when sitting in seat) the transmission cover has a flanged edge wich will carry dirt and moisture causing this connection to fail. Remove the retaining bolt, cable and washer. Clean up the cable, washer and top of transmission cover with some emmery cloth (to a shine) and reassemble. I have seen this failure burn up sevral repacement starters before people relized what was causing the actual problem. If you find that this was a concern with your tractor you may want to have the starter checked out. The continued use of the starter under these conditions will really play hell with a good starter! Hope you find this helpful. Good Luck!!
