You can do exactly what searchtempest does directly from Craigslist now.
Run your search on the local Craigslist. On the results page, look on the left side. Click "include nearby areas" and add cities to taste. This is exactly what Searchtempest does now since Craigslist enhanced their "include nearby areas" feature.
I highly recommend "bundle duplicates" too. Helps cut down on the idiot spammers who advertise their junk on every Craigslist within a 500 mile radius.
Craigslist is supposed to be for local face-to-face transactions, so they have always designed their site to discourage "national" searches. Unless you plan on showing up in person with cash in hand, be aware that some people may not want to deal with you.
