Was it just a local thing here,or were kids farmed out in other parts of the country? I could name you three guys,first and last names,who were sent to live on other farms when they were kids. I can name the families they lived with too. In fact,my aunt and uncle were the couple that one of them lived with. That guy was one of four brothers and one sister. My aunt and uncle needed him more than he was needed at home. One of the other guys was one of four boys too. The third one was one of seven brothers on a small farm. They lived right with the other families,went to school from there,came home,worked and slept there. It was quite a common thing. You'd probably be arrested for child cruelty or slavery if you tried that today.
