Hey -at least your mess was overt and easy to see. Mine was hidden.
Here are some photos from the last foreclosed home I bought. Old 40 acre farm in northern Michigan and the work was done by the farmer and his friends. Sorry - not done by "Billy Bob" or "Bubba." Just by someone low on funds trying to get by.
Old pole barn had an underground 100 amp 220 volt service and one leg was dead. I saw a low spot out in the sheep pasture and dug by hand with a shovel. I found where the buried cable had been drilled through with a fence-post auger and then spliced with duct tape and a short length of copper against the URD aluminum. I repaired it with some water-proof splices and got rid of the copper.
Then inside the house - found the roof collapsing because the rafters were 14 foot long, free-span and only rough 2" X 4" poplar. I had to more-or-less, build in place trusses to save the roof from the inside. It had a major leak just over the main electric panel and it was a mess. Half the breakers did not work due to water damage.
I built a new pole barn out back , 250 feet from the house and ran some underground URD cable in conduit, under water, for a 80 amp, 220 volt service. NOT fun laying it under water but no choice. Water is three feet down and I dug the trench four feet deep.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
