Since the article mentioned world population in 2009, I tried to google current world population. I found various links of estimated populations in various geographical areas of our nation, east, west, etc. I did find a couple of sites that said that the population was as low as 15 birds in 1941. I found other sites that said that the groups of birds have been scattered by forest fires, and since they migrate to Texas for the winter, and Texas has been an extreme drought territory, that they aren't going there either. The crane experts said because of that, that collecting population data is a pretty hard thing to do. I hope things have gotten better for them since 2009, but I can't tell. I don't hunt cranes, but bobcats and eagles do. Stupid bobcats and eagles.
