As for her problem. She/you should just have had a new over size plug installed. These are not the cheap self tapping ones but plugs that require you to tap the hole to another size. Cost less than $15 and takes maybe half an hour to do.
As for the cost of the repair at the dealership. The Delco oil pan is right at $100. Dorman has them for $60. The kicker is the labor required to change it. You just about have to remove the motor from the car to get the motor up enough to get the pan off. So I could see the labor running $700.
