A fellow I grew up across the road from was once in a race with about three other farmers to see who could become the biggest operator in the county.
He farmed all over the county, had a big chartreus Steiger and other big row crop tractors, etc. He got to the point of going through 2 packs of Rolaids a day during planting just from the stress of getting it all coordinated. Soil was different in different areas of the county, rainfall differed across the county, etc. He called it quits when he was 64, but kept a quarter section and a hog operation to keep his hired man busy. His hired man had been with him for 20 years and he didn't want to let him go.
He died four years later, at 68, mostly just plain burned out and worn out.
