Hi rustred and everybody else who took the time to reply to my question.
Thank you very much for your suggestions, at the beginning I was more confused by the different replies but I think I have it sorted now, here are my thoughts and I hope they are correct:
If no 4 is DOWN then No 1,2,3 & 5 is UP and I can adjust the clearance and on the second turn when No 4 is UP I then adjust No 4 & 6.
So I can only adjust any given valve if the rocker end on the valve stem is in the UP position and the valve is closed, this does make sense now and I will do the adjustment tomorrow.
