Jocco there are some very simple things to remember when dealing with an insurance company. 1)If it's your insurance company then they work for you--they're not giving you anything you paid for it. 2)If it's the other person's insurance the company has a requirement to put you back in the same situation you were in before the incident at no expense to you. 3)Be fair! Don't try to take advantage--don't try to improve your car. 4)Don't give in! Remember as a last resort you can go to court if you are the injuried party.
Now you said "the body shop.." only one? Go to another one or two for multiple estimates. If you have the capability you can put in an estimate. You don't have to leave it at the tow storage lot just pay the storage fee. You always say where you want it towed to.
Two years ago (doesn't that long) I had an "incident" with a 2004 Chevy 2500HD. Before we left the scene fault had been determine by the State Police (the other party caused the incident). As I crawled into the tow truck I asked where are we going he responded, as he should, We have a storage lot and named the location is that OK. We moved on my acknowledgement. I told the storage lot manager no one looks at the truck without me being there. I got the appropriate call. The adjuster had looked at it when I got there and I think had a preliminary estimate of the repair cost. His opening comment was "well the bags went and we usually total the vehicle.." I stopped him there with a reminder of his company's responsibilities and he didn't want to talk about. They fixed the truck. To be fair I used another truck I own while they fixed it--no cost. I did not require OEM or new repair parts.
