With the T/A the first thing to check after testing by putting it in torque and applying brake is. Did it stop and make a noise? If it kept going the adjustment may be just off. The older tractors you could leave them in direct and use them for a long time before repair as usually the spraque clutch failed from free wheeling. We only had the 574 so I do not know how the 584 works. If you have it split to put the motor in your half way to replacing the T/A. Try adjusting the t/a first if the motor will move the tractor; but if it is dead testing the T/A clutch by turning the engine backwards in direct doesn't always prove if it is good if this has a hydraulic T/A It will keep you from turn the engine backwards very far). Again I have very little experience with that series. Always like the 574 when we had it.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
