"Sixty years ago, virtually every child in the United States, regardless of skin color, was raised in a functional, two parent family by parents who looked at their role as parents as a serious lifelong commitment and responsibility, not as an inconvenience to be shunted off onto someone else."
Death among spouses was a little more prevalent back then though. Step siblings were quite common. A spouse would die,a parent would remarry. As far as raising your own kids,I could name you at least three people who I know personally who were farmed out to other families. There were lots of kids in the family, another family needed help on the farm, and a child would be sent to live with them. My dad's cousin was raised by another uncle and his wife. His mother died when he was young and instead of raising him alone, his father sent him off to live with the aunt and uncle. Times weren't as innocent as we like to think they were. I remember Dad telling one time of two men who literally changed lives. They traded wives, kids and farms and just moved on that way.
Not trying to stir anybody up,but that's just the way things really were.
