This what I do to a carburetor: When I buy a rebuilt kit I will see if I have any Carburetor cleaning solvent. What it is a large can with a metal screen tray in it. This stuff is to clean and soak your carburetors in it. You take the old carburetor apart make sure all the rubber is taken out, gaskets off but you do not have to take the better fly out leave it on. Put the parts on the screen encoding the body parts of the carb. Then put them in to the carb. cleaner solvent let then set for about 1 1/2 Hour then pull them out. Get you air compressor running and use compress air. spraying it threw those gas ports wholes and the other big parts. All small parts like screws, Jets use a good clean rag wipe them dry. Put all the stuff on a clean work table and get your kit them start assembling. This what I do for the holly carb. for my cars and yes some times for my tractors if they are really bad and dirty. There are those times when Yes a light clean will do the trick but use your judgement on the carburetor on how it looks. Good Luck.
