: I'm new to tractors and looking to buy a 9N at an auction : this weekend. It's a 1949 with hydraulic lift and owned by same : person for 30 years. Overhauled 15 years ago, starts ok, needs : paint. I'm planning to use it on my 4 acres for field mowing, a garden : and possibly a small Christmas tree area. I think I would only use : it 10-15 times a year. Is this a good tractor for someone new to them? : Is it easy to maintain myself? Thanks for your advice. I don't own one, and haven't driven one in years, but here's my 2 cents worth: For reasons that escape me completely, 8N/2N/9N Fords have a tendency to get premium prices, you might want to check around and see what they're going for. 15 years on an overhaul may or may not be significant, depending upon how it was used for those 15 years. Any older gas engine tractor will be pretty simple to maintain. One good thing about the Fords is that they are so popular, the majority of parts are everywhere, until you start getting into some of the very early original cast aluminum bits. Depending on what type of mower you're planning to run, it should be fine. Most any finish mower will be no problem, and a small bushhog (4') should work fine. You'll probably need an overrun clutch to keep the bushhog's flywheel effect from driving the tractor through the PTO when you push in the clutch. Also, be comforted by the fact that you can get anwsers to most any question on this site, sooner or later, so working on it shouldn't be a concern.
