I plant and save seed for around 30 heirloom varieties and have good luck with them. A lot of heirloom tomato seed is indeterimate or vining and can grow up to 10ft, as someone else said you have to pick the suckers and stake them. I also plant a few other types like Sweet Million and one called Scotia, which was developed in Kentville(Research Station) Nova Scotia for colder climates, almost always does good.
Makes me want to get out and start some early seeds.
