: I'm new to tractors and looking to buy a 9N at an auction : this weekend. It's a 1949 with hydraulic lift and owned by same : person for 30 years. Overhauled 15 years ago, starts ok, needs : paint. I'm planning to use it on my 4 acres for field mowing, a garden : and possibly a small Christmas tree area. I think I would only use : it 10-15 times a year. Is this a good tractor for someone new to them? : Is it easy to maintain myself? Thanks for your advice. I have a '47 2N which is more or less the same tractor as you are looking at . I use it to bushog approx. 10 acres . I use a 5' bushog with little trouble . It will cut saplings to about 2" dia . without hesitating . The guys are right , always use an overide clutch or you may get seriuosly hurt ! I also have used it to plow , disc and cultivate with good results . I like the three speed better than the 4 speed on the 8N . But thats just me . The tractors are fairly easy to work on but you need to check it out carefully before you buy to avoid surprises . Check the hydraulics for proper operation . Pick up a load and see if it picks up steady . Note where the lift lever is when it begins to lift . Also check and see if it will hold a load with the PTO disconnected . If it drops fairly quickly , then you probably have a stuck or bad check valve or scored cylinder . Lift problems can be expensive so really check it out . Check the lift arm bushings by lifting up on the lift arms . You should not have a lot of play . This is about a $60 fix , but can be a pain in the rear . Check the charging and electrical system to make sure it is charging and the wiring is ok . A charging problem can cost upwards of $200 or more. Check the brakes for proper function and look for leaks from the axle seals . New brake shoes are around $60 and require removing the rear wheels . Take a good close look at the rear wheels to make sure they are not rusted badly from fluid leaks . I had this problem on mine and had to have a liner installed inside my rims for $ 20 ea. .Also look at the rear tires , a new set cost me $420 . Look at the front wheels also , many have the front hubs changed to automobile hubs . This can cause a pain if your wheels need replacing . Check out the front end bushing as well . A severely worn front end bushing could mean replacing not only the bushing , but the kingpin , and possibly re-working the front axle . Check all external bushings , etc. , they can be replaced for little cost . I hope that I haven't scared you away from buying an "N" and that you now know a little more of what to look out for ! I love my 2N and would buy another one any time . Good Luck , Tractor Man PS. e-mail me at chrisg@allenprecision-ind.com if I can help you .
