Well, those model tractors, along with the 6, 7, 8, and 900 series were very prone to have "air in hydraulic oil" problems ie: it takes a lot of bleeding the system to get all the air out. It sounds like the old girl has been up graded from vane type pump to the piston pump. Take the 3/8 air bleed plug out from the top of my the pump and leave it out for a day and see if that helps. It will depend some on the temperature of the oil <>and the viscosity, also. Screw the plug in after that only letting 2 threads catch the opening and let the engine crank without starting (pull coil wire) and you should see some air bubbles come from around the plug. When no more air is coming out, screw in the plug and tighten.. If it has air in the system, this should help.
