Is it a Delco alternator ? If it has an external regulator and has the plug 0n the alternator rear face with the terminals arranged like this, {II}, it may be a Delco DN series with external regulator. If so, the squeal sounds like a regulator problem.
Both the external regulated Delco DN and the internal regulated Delco SI have a 3 wire hookup, so both could be called 3 wire.
What is normally considered to be a 3 wire alternator is the internal regulator Delco SI series, the plug would be on the rear side edge and have the terminals arranged like this {- -}, a long narrow plug, unlike the square plug on the rear face of the external regulator Delco DN alternator.
