Unexpected consequences. Had I bounced a check in my youth, someone from the bank would have called me and explained the problem and given me a chance to fix it. I would have respected them for helping me.
In my daughters case, they used the situation to maximize short term profits and take advantage of a naive and distracted young customer and thus made her a lifelong skeptic of businesses. (and probably a lifelong liberal voter).
