There should be a cover over the engine. The cover could have been removed or it sat with the cover open too.. The cover doesn't do much but it does keep the direct rain off the engine. The exhaust should not be vertical but rather at a slant a bit above horizontal unless someone rotated it up to vertical. If the exhaust is in the normal position WITH a muffler I doubt any rain water made it to the cylinders but condensation could still wreak it's havoc. I would pull the engine/radiator out as a unit and see what you have. That $100 figure sounds about right to me. Probably the reason they were parked was because of the combine itself, not the engine.
