Yes, my grandparents came to this country from Sweden. They landed at Ellis Island in New York. That is where they were given physical examinations and if they didn't pass, they were sent back. Once processed, they were "legal" immigrants as were millions more who immigrated to this country. Today it's different, many come here illegally, no health checks and no controls as to how many have come or are coming. Some say there are 11 million illegal immigrants in the US, but my guess would be at least double that. We shouldn't blame the illegals for being here. If I lived in Mexico and worked all day for $10. for the days work. I would probably want to come too. It's the fault of government from allowing it to happen for the last 30 years. Now that so many have been here for so long, many elected officials want to reward them for their mistakes of allowing this to happen. These people knew they were breaking the law when they came here, so they shouldn't be surprised if they get sent back home. Just because they've lived here for years shouldn't give them a free pass to stay. It has gotten completely out of control now. The illegals in many cases are treated better than our citizens as far as government handouts. Food stamps, free medical, rent, education and much more. My grandparents, parents and myself paid taxes our whole lives and did any of us get any of these freebies? No! We paid our way. So it is frustrating when people come here and get on the dole right away, and probably stay on the dole for generations to come. I can see helping Americans who need help but not people who aren't supposed to be here in the first place.
