I would look at the PCV system, particularly the PCV valve and the rubber vacuum hose it attaches to. You would probably notice oil in the the intake or signs of oil going through the intake and ports.
As far as chain failure problem, the chain tensioner is hydraulic so its possible that low oil pressure caused too much slack. I have also seen a few overhead cam engines lock up the cams or try to lock the cams up due to lack of oil, maybe that could cause jumped chain?
