Wheel Horse 8 speed transmission

I know this is a little off topic but here goes. I have a neighbor who recently asked if I could post a question for him about the 8 speed transmission on a Wheel Horse its in a (C-85). It has 3 forward and 1 reverse in a low range and 3 forward and 1 reverse in high range. While mowing he said it just stopped moving. When he moved the range lever to low he had all of the gearsin low range but none in high range. Now when moving the range lever to high or low the gears are all in the low range only. He said he had been having trouble with the range selector popping out of high recently. I looked at it briefly and it appears you have to split the transmission in half to get inside of it. It sounds to me like the range shifter is broke or something is stripped inside. Any ideas on what the problem might be or what its going to cost to repair. Any input would be greatly appreciated !
