I think the original post was indicating that there were talks between IH and Ford for Ford to acquire ALL of IH, I know that Lee Iacocca mentioned in one of his books that there were talks going on between Ford and Chrysler when things were getting pretty bad at Chrysler, but it didn't happen. What would of happened had they merged in the 80's? Would Ford kept the heavy truck line they sold off in the late 90's? Of course the farm equipment consolidation would of been moved forward a little sooner. Would of the Blue Diamond venture ever happened? (Blue Diamond is/was a company the makes medium duty trucks, it's owners are Ford Motor Company and Navistar. the truck they make said Ford or Navistar on them). So many variations might of occurred, for instance Ford acquired New Holland in 1986, would they of done that if they already owned IH? Might New Holland been sold off to a foreign company and became a conduit for foreign tractors into the US? Or might New Holland merged into Case making them a full line or would Case pair off with someone else (AGCO?) Or would the European assault on the US market been lead by the Foreign manufacturer using New Holland, Hesston and/or New Idea to slid into the US market?
No telling, it didn't happen, the history has already been written and it won't change. Bottom line is over the last 100 years there have been changes to the US market for agricultural equipment, trucks, cars construction equipment and retail sales. Some firms adapted, some didn't, some came to market with new ideas that were successful, some with new ideas that ended the business and some refused to change and are no longer around. Many people complain about all the money the executives in these large companies make but the decisions they make influence the business and many times cause the business to be successful and thrive or to fail.
