Back when I had my plow the 3 bolt became unavaible and we had to use the 4 bolt that was 1/2" longer sticking out on the left side. He has the full cut that you need for sod with roots, the narrow cut is for ground that does not have deep rooted weeds as if you have those deep roots a strip of then will not get cut off and keep growing. Never had a 4 bolt frog to try a 3 bolt share on so I don't know about going with the older (3 bolt) share to the newer (4 bolt) frog.
