I believe that most people who raise cattle as a hobby would be shocked to know what it really costs to maintain a cow and calf for a year. The national average is somewhere around $800. Since my debt is low and my land is paid for mine runs slightly less than $600, unless I'm forgetting something. Some may think they are getting by cheaper but look at it over a 40 year span and at some point you will have to fork over money for something you forgot to consider. I feed an average of 6 bales of hay a winter and at the very least it costs me $35 a bale by the time I consider the fuel, fertilzer, lime, chemicals, maintenance of the equipent and oter expence. That is for hay only. Fence repair vet expense, taxes, mineral and feed all add up pretty quick. Even if you own your land you have to consider what it's worth for rent if you were renting. That's money you could be making without working it.
