David, My 2004, 20 hp kohler command, horizontal shaft, has 1800 hours on it. Doesn't use oil. Had to lap valves on one head. I run mine 2600 rpms. Good engine, so far. It has hydraulic lifters and roller main bearings.I change oil and filter as soon as oil turns dark, between 60-75 hours.
Boys at the mower repair shop say they have seen those with 4-5000 hours. But like everything, parts do break. geo Boy had a briggs on a John Deere push mower, the bolt on crankshaft came lose and rod went out the side of motor. Very low hours on it.
