Brush and thickets of saplings, bushes etc. always seem to want to throw a chain in my experience. Definitely need to be careful and wear the chaps when using a saw in that stuff or find another way. He is lucky, thankfully it was not any worse.
I gouged myself while climbing down from the top of a barn wall after setting trusses one cold December day. This section had collapsed so we repaired it and the horse stall fronts were the interior wall we set them on. I scaled my way down, hugging the wall and gouged out the cut you see through my denim jeans without tearing them ! 1/2" stall latch end was all it took. Male nurse at the hospital later that evening, (had to make a run with the sileage truck at my other job 1st) said you really need to wear chaps when cutting with a chainsaw, he was convinced that is what caused it. Not the case, but what a tough one to numb up before stitching, had some quality time with the female doctor on that. She was finally able to make it bearable to sew up !
