When we used to weld the cast iron tandem hubs on Champion graders we made an oven out of brick and set the hub on charcoal and then covered it in charcoal and lit it. Once it got hot after about half a day in there, we welded it with nickel rod, then stuck it back in there and covered it with more charcoal. Let it burn out for a day or 2 to make sure it was cool, always worked well.
