So it had one original problem, plus an unknown number of other problems induced by his buddies' tinkering.
You fixed one problem, the mis-adjusted points, which may or may not be the original problem. I would first check that the plug wires appear to be in the right locations and order, although these tractors will run surprisingly well with two swapped plug wires.
A snort of starting fluid will prove whether or not it's just a fuel problem. Of course, everything else has to be more or less right for it to fire up on ether.
Has it been sitting long enough for one or more valves to stick open? That can cause the "backfire" issues you describe.
