As others have stated, the base oil may be the same, but it's additive package, and what it does, that makes the difference.
That said, I've had plenty of experience with the differences over the past 20 years. One that stands out was a customer who ran 'name brand' oil in all of his equipment. The air compressors on his drills were eating turbos every 8 months or so, due to shutting down while running around 1200 rpm. I got him started on a 'premium' oil from LE, and we began getting in excess of 2 years out of the turbos on those engines. When he switched to their compressor oil the temps on them dropped in excess of 10 degrees.
The man that turned me onto LE has used their products exclusively for over 40 years. In that time he has never had what you would call a lubrication related failure. In fact, when rebuilding a 3306 CAT engine for him, that had been in service for over 12 years, the rods, mains, and cylinder bores all checked within specs for standard. Dad worked at CAT building engines for several years back in the early 80's and said this NEVER happens. This same guy just had the main pump on his 345 excavator rebuilt a few years ago. The guys at the pump shop were amazed that the machine had nearly 10,000 hours on it. They said they never see those pumps get over 6000 hours before needing a rebuild.
Greases are the same way. I had one customer who was resistant to using good grease as it was about twice the cost of the cheap stuff. Once they began using it, they cut their greasing intervals by half, this making the cost for the good stuff equal to the cheap stuff. After a few weeks running like that, they cut the intervals again. Ultimately the good grease wound up being cheaper than the cheap stuff, as well as providing much better protection, thus saving money instead of costing more.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
