I believe all the choices in engine oils and other lubricants are much better today than what we had 20 or 30 years ago, and especially even longer ago than that. I remember when a particular brand of engine oil got a bad reputation, but I cannot remember exactly what it was. I can share that my parents had a mid-1970's Oldsmobile which had that brand of oil (Quaker State) in it for a few years, until they switched brands. Several years afterwards, the engine was torn down and overhauled. The man who did this work told us about how cruddy the internals of the engine were, which were in contact with the engine oil. He had seen another engine that had used this brand of oil and found the same thing. He also commented about another engine out of a Chevrolet was so incredibly clean, as the owner had used a particular engine oil that was approved for use in both gasoline and diesel engines, figuring the detergent in the oil kept the internals as clean as they were. The first car I had was a 1982 Ford LTD. That car had Pennzoil from when it was new. Every time I changed oil in that car, when using Pennzoil, initially, there was some water that came out of the front sump of the oil pan, but not the rear sump. I switched to Trop Artic, and that issue never showed up again. I use Rotella 5W-40 synthetic in my Duramax diesel engine. The prior owner had used Rotella. This is the first diesel engine I have ever been around that did not turn the engine oil black shortly after an oil change. The oil remains mostly brown and relatively clear during the entire service interval. The engine does not use oil and I hope this is a good sign in that the engine is tight, that I am using premium grade diesel fuel with ultra low sulfur levels, and that I do not have harsh contaminants getting into the crankcase. On a final note, I have found my use of synthetic engine oils, especially during the winter months, my engines turn over faster, easier, and start a bit quicker. I tend to think this is a reason as to why my batteries seem to last longer than they did before I made the switch. I opted to switch to full synthetic because the female drivers in our household do not keep a close eye on the mileage and the next service due.

Today's Featured Article - Hydraulics - Cylinder Anatomy - by Curtis von Fange. Let’s make one more addition to our series on hydraulics. I’ve noticed a few questions in the comment section that could pertain to hydraulic cylinders so I thought we could take a short look at this real workhorse of the circuit. Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic circuit. They take the fluid power delivered from the pump and magically change it into mechanical power. There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
