I am at that planning stage myself, interesting read. I think that while they do have some use that models and averages really are not going to hit on reality for anyone. I will say that if it takes 80-100k to retire I am I deep do-do because I have never made close to that my entire life yet I have managed to pay for the farm and everything else we call ours. My much younger wife went to work full time 6 months ago for the first time in her life so she would have insurance when I retire and every cent she has earned is sitting in an account she created for the direct deposit. Life styles and health have a huge bearing on what it takes as does circumstances out of our controld. Plan for none of it and your going to be in trouble. My plan? Rental income pays all my taxes and insurance. I will live on my SS and a bit of part time work that will be about 75% of what I make now.
