Were you the one who posted this earlier this month? ANYWAY, early Escapes/Mariners should have had the vehicles recalled for faulty brake lines. They have a tendency to rupture and have a sudden loss of brakes. They are not hard to change and they aren't that expensive either. Ford still sells these (and why shouldn't they? They sell a lot of them) and you can get some fairly inexpensive replacements from the aftermarket, probably made by the Chinese manufacturer Sunsong, no matter what brand you buy. I have both a 2002 AWD and a 2003 AWD Escape and I will be replacing all four flexible brake lines this weekend on my 2002. Yes, it definitely needs them replaced as it looks like it could burst at any time. The 2003 will get all brake lines replaced after the 2002 has been finished.
