I don't know what the lug nut size is. Might be a good time to just buy a cheap set of deep impact sockets, the heavy wall black sockets. You will eventually need them for this project.
What you describe for the wiring will work. Since there is a lot of bad wiring, you may want to disconnect the feed to the existing wiring when you do the temporary hot wire to get it on the trailer. Be extremely careful when cranking it that it is out of gear!
