My neighbor has a 706D (I think early model). It runs very good, has a little blow-by but after getting up to running temp it burns pretty clear. Motor was rebuilt some time ago. He's getting some oil accumulating at the top of the radiator (not much) and has been running it for a few years that way. He's kept clean oil in it and has checked for coolant in the oil but there is not been a trace. He claims the bottom end was checked out and it is solid with no end play and mains look good.
He wants to replace the head gasket and for the trouble also wants to put a new or reconditioned head on it. If the bores look decent and don't show wear beyond the tolerances can he also get away with putting in new rings?
He does not work it hard anymore -- mostly discing, mowing, pushing snow. All of this is his idea. I have no experience with these tractors and I am no engine builder myself.
