Then, too, it tells of a failed attempt by the U.S. to retrieve a sunken Soviet submarine. Only a part of the sub was retrieved, but that part did contain the remains of six Soviet crewmen. The remains were re-buried at sea with full military honors, with a memorial service in both English and Russian with both national anthems played.
The service was taped, and after the USSR broke up the tape was played for relatives of the Russian crewmen. Some were visibly moved that a country that they had considered arch-enemies for years would treat the Russian dead with the same respect as their own.
