Gotta love it when someone throws up a post and you get the impression they vanished and never came back to read the answers! When I got my JD 7000 the rear-most boxes, what I would call the "insecticide boxes" although I am sure they have other uses/names, were full of squash seeds. Given that those are for surface application of smaller material, I have to think they could put a serious hurt on those seeds. Never did figure out what they were trying to do there. Anyhow, metered or otherwise, the machine should not damage the seed. I know little about plate planters but if you have meters, open them up and see if the backer plates are really rough. If they get seriously corroded then your seed could be getting damaged. Mine were bad and a forum member with more experience worked on them for me. I have a pretty good handle on the operation now...it is a good system. If you are getting damage, the metering is where it is likely happening.
