We like to pasture as many heifers in the summer as we have ready to go out in the spring. The milk cows stay inside all year as do the dry cows. That being said the ones under 8 months I like to keep home because I find they don't grow as well on pasture when they need the extra energy from the ration even though I give them grain in the pasture if they're too young they usually see a lot of meals but don't have many. If they're within 2 months of needing bred they stay home and if they're within 2 months of calving they stay home also. Soo that pretty much guarantees every animal going to pasture has never been loose outside or seen a fence. So this year to be smart we let them out of the trailer straight into the corral and left them all there to settle down before letting them loose. First I let 7 out and closed the gate and they just wandered around peacefully checking out their surroundings. Than all heck broke loose! Three of them charged the fence full tilt knocked 80 feet of barb wire flat and snapped off 4 posts. One got cut up quite s bit but she looks ok. They went back in easy but sure created some panic for this middle age fella,man getting too old for that stuff lol
