Yep, I know....at least from one country anyhow. Been to Finland 3 times; last time was there nearly a year. Guy I was working with had a toothache, and I happened to have some Tylenol Extended Release tablets - not the Extra Strength. He went NUTS, saying they couldn't even get medications that strong by prescription!
While there, I also had the chance to encounter my first-ever hemorrhoid. Dang, they hurt!! Guy took me into his clinic and all they had was the little suppositories like Preparation H makes. Did nothing for me. Called home, Mom called her doctor and told him the problem. Next thing I'm getting some stuff in the mail that cleared up hemorrhoids in LESS THAN a day!! That "stuff" was called Proctofoam HC and came in this tiny little aerosol canister, then you fill a plastic injector with just enough foam, squirt it in and you're done. Within an hour the pain is gone. GONE!! Unfortunately, the enviro-nuts have had that taken off the market, as it was an aerosol, and therefore destroyed the atmosphere. (...At least that's the story I was given by a pharmacist here in MN some years back)....(and yes, I can still be a pain in the butt!!)
I'll admit, it's really nice when you can live life KNOWING that you have medical facilities available to you. What's that called....oh, a "safety net". I also know it's nice to get a gov't check every month, and not have to deal with all that misery called "a job"! But in the grand scheme of things, ANYTHING that is "given" to the masses will fail. Why? It's not because the idealism is bad, but because due to human nature, people tend to forget what life was like before and will take advantage of this new "free" gift, or will figure out some way to plunder and profit from it.
Again, I'm about as conservative as they come, but the idealism behind Communism is actually pretty awesome. ...It's also not possible! If people were totally perfect and totally honest, that'd be a different story.
Now, in closing this mini-novel, let me mention that I have suffered from occasional sinus headaches and infections throughout much of my life. And BY FAR the best medication I've ever seen that helped was an OTC (NOTE: Not available even by prescription in socialized medicine!) called Tylenol Allergy Sinus. It's gone; can't even buy the generic ingredients for it anymore. Why? Druggies! There was some component in there that people found could be made into meth. They got so god at making meth from the stuff that there's stories all over (documented!) of how druggies would go into Wal-Mart (for example), grab some stuff off the shelf, go into a bathroom stall and cook up some of the illegal meth. Over a decade has passed and, last I checked, scientists and chemists were trying to figure out how to make this one component inseparable, so as to be useless to druggies. Haven't been hearing anything about this for a couple years now, so I'm guessing they finally just gave up. All I know is, I still haven't found anything out there that even comes CLOSE to working as awesome!!
Oh, and if socialized medicine is so great, then why are we having so many Canadians coming here for their healthcare?? We're up here right next to the border, and I doubt there is any moment in time when you can go to the clinic waiting room and NOT find a Canadian citizen here for better medical care - or avoiding the long wait times. 12 years ago, we could often get in to see our doctor same day. Now, it's at least a 3 month wait - usually 4-6 months!! They have 4 times the number of doctors on hand now, and the population hasn't even doubled from then - nowhere near it. So "SOMETHING" is really screwed up in the system now!!

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
